<p><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was originally introduced by Cesati and De Notaris (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Cesati and De Notaris 1863</xref>). In the early 20th century, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Child (1932)</xref> conducted the first comprehensive global study on <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, describing 13 species and introducing anamorphic features and physiological traits for classification purposes. However, her work contained inaccuracies in species descriptions, leading to confusion. Later, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ju et al. In the early 21st century, the integration of molecular biology and chemotaxonomic techniques significantly advanced the taxonomic study of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Johannesson et al. Subsequent ecological studies uncovered its endophytic lifestyle and rapid colonization ability following host damage (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Rogers 2000</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Stadler 2011</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Stadler et al. Overall, the taxonomy of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> has evolved from a morphology-based approach to a multidisciplinary research framework, gradually resolving earlier taxonomic confusions and providing a foundation for understanding its ecological and evolutionary relationships.</p>
<p>In recent years, the classification framework of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> has stabilized. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Wendt et al. (2018)</xref> confirmed through multi-gene phylogenetic analysis (ITS, 28S, rpb2, and tub2) that <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and its relatives form a distinct clade within <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Hypoxylaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, clearly differentiated from <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Hypoxylon">Hypoxylon</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pyrenopolyporus">Pyrenopolyporus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. The application of a polyphasic approach has significantly increased species diversity, revealing multiple cryptic species. For instance, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Stadler et al. (2004)</xref> described five new species from the Canary Islands, Channel Islands, and Sicily, while <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Wongkanoun et al. (2019)</xref> reported a new record and a new species from northern Thailand. Additionally, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Pažoutová et al. (2024)</xref> isolated and identified seven new anamorphic species from diseased leaves in southern China, analyzing their geographical distribution and host specificity, which suggests that warm, humid, and vegetatively rich regions may harbor more <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and fungal resources.</p>
<p>The stromata of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> fungi are prominent and persistent, often forming dense clusters on woody plants, making them easily noticeable. Internally, the stromata exhibit horizontal zonation, a key feature distinguishing this genus from other pyrenomycete fungi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Stadler et al. 2014</xref>). Traditionally, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was considered a saprophyte, primarily causing white rot on dead angiosperm wood. However, recent studies suggest they may persist as endophytes within host tissues, forming stromata only when the host is damaged or stressed, leading to their previous misidentification as “rare” despite potentially widespread distribution (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Stadler and Hellwig 2005</xref>). In this paper, during the identification of plant pathogenic fungi from diseased leaves in Guizhou Province, China, two <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species were unexpectedly isolated from <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Indocalamus">Indocalamus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hirsutissimus">hirsutissimus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Rubus">Rubus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="idaeus">idaeus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Molecular and morphological analyses confirmed the establishment of a new species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rubi">rubi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov., and reported a new host record species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="eschscholtzii">eschscholtzii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. <p>In this study, two <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="eschscholtzii">eschscholtzii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rubi">rubi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, were discovered on leaf spot samples of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Indocalamus">Indocalamus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hispidus">hispidus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Rubus">Rubus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="idaeus">idaeus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> in Guizhou Province, China. This represents the first record of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> on host plants belonging to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Rubus">Rubus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Rosaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Indocalamus">Indocalamus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Poaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>). Globally, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> exhibits an exceptionally broad host range, with the USDA database documenting over 600 host species (<ext-link xlink:href="https://fungi.ars.usda.gov/" ext-link-type="uri" xlink:type="simple">https://fungi.ars.usda.gov/</ext-link>). Within China, previously reported <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species have primarily been found on woody plants of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Fagaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Lauraceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Sapindaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Moraceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Betulaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<ext-link xlink:href="https://fungi.ars.usda.gov/" ext-link-type="uri" xlink:type="simple">https://fungi.ars.usda.gov/</ext-link>). By contrast, records on <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Rosaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Poaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> hosts remain scarce. The present study significantly expands the known host range of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> in China.</p>
<p>Notably, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> exhibits distinctive biological characteristics in its sexual morph, most remarkably through the formation of large stromata on woody branches. These structures characteristically display concentric zonation patterns internally and produce ellipsoidal, brownish to dark brown ascospores (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Stadler et al. 2001a</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Stadler et al. 2004</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Stadler et al. 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Liu et al. 2025</xref>). However, our investigations, consistent with previous studies, have failed to observe a sexual stage in <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> specimens collected from diseased foliage in Southwest China (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">Yin et al. 2024</xref>). This phenomenon suggests that the life cycle transition in <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> may be influenced by an intricate interplay of environmental conditions, climatic factors, and host-specific characteristics. Moreover, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> may initially colonize leaves as endophytes or latent pathogens. When host vigor declines or environmental conditions become favorable, these fungi may exhibit pathogenicity. Subsequent studies should conduct artificial inoculation experiments to confirm <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>’s pathogenicity and determine how environmental factors and host conditions affect its virulence.</p>
<p>This study systematically compiled the global host range of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="eschscholtzii">eschscholtzii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, revealing its ability to parasitize over 50 plant families while demonstrating distinct host preferences (Suppl. material <xref ref-type="supplementary-material" rid="S2">2</xref>). These fungi primarily colonize dicotyledonous plants, with a particular affinity for the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Rosales</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Fabales</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> orders, showing the highest frequency on the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Fabaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Lauraceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Moraceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> families. Notably, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="eschscholtzii">eschscholtzii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> exhibits cross-clade infectivity, capable of rarely colonizing gymnosperms (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Pinaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) and ferns. As shown in Suppl. material <xref ref-type="supplementary-material" rid="S2">2</xref>, tropical-affiliated families (e.g., <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Lauraceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Myrtaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) are disproportionately represented among hosts, many of which include economically significant crops such as citrus and soybean. These characteristics reflect an evolutionary balance between broad-spectrum infectivity and specialized host adaptation in <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="eschscholtzii">eschscholtzii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>.</p>
<p>Current studies reveal a wide distribution of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> fungi around the world, demonstrating their strong adaptability to diverse ecological environments (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Chen 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Stadler et al. 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">Yin et al. 2024</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Liu et al. 2025</xref>). This suggests potential undiscovered <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Daldinia">Daldinia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species across various ecosystems, warranting more systematic investigations. Targeted sampling in special habitats (e.g., karst formations) and non-conventional hosts would particularly advance our understanding of the biodiversity and ecological functions of this genus.</p>
